Understanding Your Newborn Photography Session: The Ultimate Parent Guide

Congratulations on your new arrival (or upcoming arrival)! Your newborn stage is fleeting. and capturing it in a way that’s gentle, safe and beautiful is an experience that lasts a lifetime. This guide is designed to prepare you for your newborn photography session, help you understand the process, and give you the practical tips so your session is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Understanding a newborn session

Before we dive into practical preparation, it’s important to understand what a newborn photography session actually involves.

A professional newborn session isn’t just taking pictures of your baby. It’s a carefully planned experience designed to capture your baby safely, comfortably, and beautifully. While smartphones have made everyone a photographer, capturing newborns in beautiful timeless portraits requires training and skill.

Professional newborn photographers bring expertise in handling babies, creating a safe environment for the photoshoot, and knowing how to capture newborns in those serene and stylised portraits. Investing in a professional newborn photographer ensures the your picturs of your new baby are not just quicky snapped phone photos but timeless treasures.

Here’s what makes it different from everyday snapshots:

  • Baby-Led Posing: The baby sets the pace. Sessions allow feeding, settling and cuddles as needed. There is no rushing, which keeps your baby calm and happy.

  • Safety First: All poses and wraps are done gently. Babies are NEVER forced into positions. The props and supports are used to ensure comfort and stability.

  • Professional Lighting: Soft, low strength and controlled studio lighting creates timeless images that is difficult to recreate at home.

  • Props: Wraps, blankets, baskets, beds, flowers, the list goes on… These are all carefully chosen according to the answers sent to parents when their newborn session is booked. That way can find out your preferences for your newborn pictures like colours, props, headbands and styling to custom design your photoshoot.

  • Parent And Sibling Involvement: Parent and siblings are encouraged in the newborn photoshoot if they so wish. I gently guide them into poses creating lovely family pictures that are often missed out on when one of them is often taking the picture themselves.

When to book your newborn session

Timing is everything for newborn photography. Most professional photographers recommend booking your session before your baby arrives, ideally during your pregnancy, for several reasons:

  • Securing Your Preferred Date: Newborn photographers often booked up weeks in advance. Booking early ensures you have a guaranteed spot when your baby arrives. Your due date is taken initially at the time of booking to organise the diary to expect your baby’s arrival.

  • Planning Around Baby’s Age: The ideal window for many newborn sessions is between 5 to 14 days old. Babies are naturally sleepier and easier to pose, so therefore the photoshoot is more affective at obtaining a full and varied gallery of pictures.

Flexibility: Booking early allows the photographer to accommodate early or late arrivals. Example: If your baby arrives a little early at 38 weeks, having your session pre-booked means the photographer can adjust timing without stress. Waiting until birth to book can often result in limited availability or disappointment because they have no availability.

Preparing the studio environment

A calm environment is critical for a successful newborn session.

Temperature

  • Newborns are very sensitive to cold. A room temperature of around 24-26°C (75-78°F) is ideal. Why it matters: A warm baby is more likely to be comfortable with their clothes being removed for some period of time. Shivering or cold babies may become unsettled, cry or startle easily.

Lighting

  • Soft lighting made by a studio light gives a professional feel to the picture.

  • The positioning of the baby in regards to the lighting is essential to create a beautiful picture. Why it matters: Harsh or wrongly positioned lighting will ruin a picture.

Sound

  • Keeping background noise to a minimum.

  • Soft white noise or gentle music can help soothe the baby. Example: A gentle “shhh” sound or white noise mimics the womb environment and can settle a fussy newborn quickly.

what to wear (parents, siblings and baby)

Your clothing choices can impact the session’s outcome.

For Baby

  • Simple outfits or onesies are perfect to bring you baby in. This will make it easy to undress your baby so I can change them into a preselected outfit and/or wraps to begin the photoshoot. I will also help with not leaving pressure clothing marks on your baby’s body.

  • Most parents opt for me to provide clothing and accessories such as headbands or hats/bonnets. If you are wanting to have your baby photographed in their own outfit, be sure that the outfit fits. It is particularly hard to buy the right size clothing for your newborn as most if the time the sizes are very large for your tiny new baby. But for photographs, it is essential to have your baby in a size that fits them as they can become easy swamped in their clothing.

  • Also, avoid bright patterns or logos as they distract from the baby.

For Parents And Siblings

  • Solid colours or soft patterns work best

  • Avoid busy prints that draw attention away from the faces.

  • Neutral tones are very complementary, as well as whites and blacks. Pastel or light colours look great if you choose different tones from the same colour palette.

Tip: If parents, siblings and your newborn wear coordinating tones or colours the photos feel cohesive and put together without being “matchy-matchy”.

Feeding & Settling the baby

Feeding plays a huge role in a calm session. Babies are not calm, settled or happy when they are hungry.

  • Feed before the session: If possible! A full, happy baby is generally sleepier and easier to pose. However, there is no expectation for this to happen, as babies are on their own schedule. I will not want you to force a feed if your baby is not ready for it! I will adjust the photoshoot to allow for feeding at any point in the session. Your baby will be the boss!

  • Burp Thoroughly: Helps avoid discomfort for your baby

  • Bring Extra Milk Or Formula: In case your baby needs topping up mid-session.

Example: A sleepy, well fed baby can be gently posed without fussing. A hungry baby may cry or be unsettled, delaying the session.

Sleep & Wake Cycles

Newborns are unpredictable, but sessions are usually planned around natural sleep periods.

  • The Photoshoot Will Be Arranged for A Morning Start Time: Most babies settle best in the mornings. This is the reason why you will be given a morning time for your photoshoot. I have found this out by trial and error, and the lunchtime or afternoon starts do not go as well. The babies were more unsettled, less content and more awake.

  • Sessions Are Patient: It is very normal for babies to take time to drift off to sleep. And that is ok! I will Patiently wait, soothe and help your baby slowly fall asleep so I can start to photograph your baby.

Why It Matters: Sleepy babies can be posed safely and photographed in serene positions. More candid, parent holding shots are reserved for more awake babies.

Props, Blankets & Safety

Professional photographers use props very carefully:

  • Wraps And Blankets: Used to gently position the newborn and create soft textures in your images.

  • Baskets, Nests or Beds: Provide support and comfort as well as adding value and interest to your pictures. Newborns are never left unsupported or unsupervised in these props. In some positions in these props the photographer will support the head at all times and take a “composite” shot -where two pictures are taken with a hand holding baby’s head in different ways, then the photographer will “merge” these two pictures together in post editing to make one complete picture, therefore removing the supporting hands. The end result will be a beautiful crafted picture of your newborn peacefully laying in the basket.

Why It Matters: Props are a lovely way to create beautiful and interesting photographs of your newborn. But the photographer ensures hands are always on or close by for safety. Many parents will rarely notice, but it is crucial!

Parents Participation

Parents often worry about “what they need to do”, but your role is simple during the photoshoot:

  • Relax, watch and enjoy the photoshoot! I will guide and take charge of the session. Everything will be prepared for your arrival. I will prepare your baby for he photoshoot by undressing and dressing them. I will soothe and comfort them until they fall into a deep sleep. And I will quickly and efficiently work, photographing and posing your baby, while you can relax, have a coffee and enjoy the process of watching your newborn being photographed. You will be surprised by what is involved!

  • Follow gentle guidance from the photographer for poses that include parents and siblings.

  • Most parents hate having their photo taken. However, it is so important to have one or two at the very least with your growing family. Try to be calm and relaxed. Being tense can show in your photographs. But in the end you will be so glad that you did it!

Why It Matters: Phots with natural parent-baby interaction are often the most cherished.

Timing & Patience

  • Sessions are booked for 3 hours. Sometimes they do overrun, depending on the newborn’s needs. I only book one newborn session a day just incase they do last longer than expected. That way, no-one is rushed.

  • This is normal. A newborn photoshoot predominately allows for feeding, settling and safe posing. The photography part is only a small percentage of what is actually happening.

Why It Matters: Rushing to finish a session can result in a cranky baby, messy setups, unflattering poses and ultimately less beautiful pictures. Patience ensures the baby remains comfortable and happy.

Hair, Skin & minor details

  • Your newborn may have fine hair on their body, spots and blemishes due to sensitive new skin, newborn acne, bruising and swelling due to the process of being born or peeling and flaking skin. This is all normal and natural. I will edit out anything that is temporary like the spots, blemishes, or flaking skin. Anything else I will not touch unless you specifically request for me to do so.

  • You could give your baby a top to toe wash before the photoshoot but try not to let that dry you babies skin out. You could moisturise your baby with a gentle baby lotion if you desire.

preparing older siblings (if present)

  • Talk to siblings about what is going to happen.

  • Bring snacks, toys or anything else that you know would distract, entertain and keep them happy. A newborn shoot is a long time for your older child to sit and watch.

  • Be realistic with your expectations. Young children can lose interest or tire quickly. I will prioritise sibling and family photos for the start for the session so that they do not have to wait and worry about having their picture taken. Once done, you have the option for one parent or family member to take them home or to explore the town centre while I complete the newborn photos.

Why It Matters: Preparing a young sibling might help them understand that they will be having photos taken with their new baby brother or sister. But it will be important to understand that they might be shy or not want their pictures taken on the day. Please bear in mind that every effort will be made to capture the siblings together in a beautiful portrait.

What to bring to the session

  • Nappies, muslin and wet wipes.

  • Hair brush for baby and for yourself.

  • Milk or formula if bottle feeding.

  • Dummy (only if they already have one).

  • Optional: small keepsake that you want to include in your pictures.

Tip: Pack a small “session bag” to have everything ready so that it reduces stress and rushing on the day.

After the session

  • A gallery of 20-25 images will be edited and presented to you in a viewing appointment after the photoshoot within 2 to 3 weeks after the session.

  • At the viewing appointment, you can look through all these pictures at your leisure. There is no sales pitch or pressure, all I ask is for you to choose the pictures that you love!

  • Your chosen images are delivered digitally.

Why It Matters: I am a creative, I love what I do and I enjoy making beautiful portraits. I am not a salesman. I will never try to “sell” any of my pictures because, for starters, I am not that type of person, and because I believe that my pictures will speak for themselves. I am also upfront and transparent about my pricing, and will work with everyone to keep to their budget.

common parent question

Q: Can We Include Pets?

A: Yes! As long as they are calm and safe I am more than happy to include them. I would suggest that someone would be able to take them home as soon as they have been photographed so that they are not bored or stressed for being in a different environment for too long. Pets are usually photographed separately from baby for safety reasons, but your baby will be carefully edited in to the picture together with your pet in the final portrait.

Q: What If My Baby Doesn’t Sleep?

A: Usually 99% of babies will sleep at some point during the session. I use techniques that will help soothe and calm your newborn until they drift off to sleep. If your baby does wake I will adapt and continue to take pictures if they are calm and content.

Q: Can We Do This At Home?

A: Studio sessions are safest for controlled lighting and environment, but I do offer in-home newborn sessions if preferred. There is an extra charge for this service of £50. This is to cover preparation and packing time, travel time and setting up and packing up time.

Final tips for parents

  • When choosing a newborn photographer, look at their pictures. No two photographers are the same. They all have a unique style and technique. So rather than looking for a photographer based purely on price, look at whether you like their style? How they pose the babies? How they style the props? Price is important, but so is how the pictures you end up with too.

  • Communicate openly with your photographer. If you have any questions or concerns? Your photographer should be able to answer and reassure you. You should also let them know if there is anything specific you are wanting from the session or included.

  • Be sure to inform your photographer as soon as you can once your baby arrives. This will give your photographer notice to book you in, and for them to give you more options for dates for your session.

Lastly…

Your newborn stage is precious, fleeting and full of tiny, magical moments. A well-prepared newborn session ensures these moments are captured gently, safely and beautifully, giving you memories to treasure for a lifetime.
